How The Matter Studio documented the bold complementary palettes, European countryside details, and cinematic mood spaces in a Mumbai home by Studio Orangeworks.
Framing Cinematic Nuance & Retro-Modern Harmony
Photographing a home built for media executives requires an eye for narrative, dramatic lighting, and contrasting moods. Designed by Nusrat Pathan, founder of Studio Orangeworks, this Mumbai residence is an exercise in harmonious opposites—blending vintage warmth with sleek modern silhouettes to reflect the cinematic world of its owners.
For The Matter Studio, the creative focus was on framing bold color plays, capturing multi-textured surfaces under shifting daylight, and highlighting the distinct personality designed into every room.
1. Capturing Complementary Colors & Curved Geometries
The main living space relies on a bold color story where warm terracotta meets vivid teal.
Complementary Color Alignment: Photographing the terracotta velvet curved sofa against the bright teal backdrop required precise white balance and color accuracy to capture the saturation without bleeding undertones.
Flowing Sightlines: We framed the room to show the visual connection between the curved furniture, floral arched mouldings, and the wave-like undulations of the custom abstract artwork painted by the designer.
2. Documenting Cinematic Moods: The Den & Dining Area
Moving into the entertaining and movie spaces, the visual language shifts toward deeper tones and high-contrast styling.
The Moody Den: Designed specifically for screen viewing, the den features wine-colored walls, chequered upholstery, and dark gold rattan lighting. Our photography captured the cozy, cocooning atmosphere of the space while maintaining details in the dark cabinetry and tufted ottomans.
Dining Room Light Interplay: In the dining area, we balanced deep maroon and jade-green accent pieces against soft wooden textures and Art Deco pendant lights, utilizing large floor-to-ceiling windows to bring out natural surface grain.
3. Highlighting Room-by-Room Thematic Shifts
From European countryside charm to industrial dark palettes, each bedroom presents a completely different visual identity.
"When does a house become a home? When it imbibes the characters and stories of the people who live in it." — Nusrat Pathan
European Countryside Suite: Framing highlighted soft sky-blue walls, floral wallpaper, and an unconventional curved rattan wardrobe, taking advantage of diffused morning light to create an airy finish.
Industrial Teen's Bedroom: To contrast the softer areas of the home, we shot the teen’s room with clean, strong lines—focusing on the tactile brown leather headboard against the black exposed brick wall.
