How The Matter Studio captured the rich textures, statement marble, and dramatic lighting inside Gauri Khan's bespoke redesign of Karan Johar’s 5,500 sq ft penthouse extension.

Framing High-Contrast Maximalism in Pali Hill

Designing and photographing a space built for one of Indian cinema’s biggest personalities requires a bold visual narrative. Spanning 5,500 square feet in a quiet cul-de-sac off Bandra’s Pali Hill, this penthouse extension—designed by Gauri Khan Designs—is an exercise in "subtly over-the-top" luxury.

From dramatic monochrome panda marble to lush, tropical-lined wraparound balconies, the challenge for The Matter Studio was capturing the interplay between statement brass accents, rich color palettes, and expansive natural light.

1. Highlighting Statement Materials & Geometric Patterns

A central visual theme throughout the residence is the repeating motif of bold, high-contrast black-and-white marble, which creates strong leading lines across the apartment.

  • Entryway & Corridors: Framing the main entryway required capturing the drama of the fluted black-and-white "panda" marble wall while balancing the warm backlit kintsugi gold cracks, classic French mouldings, and bright red accent armchairs.

  • Material Depth: Using precise exposures allowed us to capture the reflective qualities of the glossy marble floors, brass coffee table accents, and the Mathieu Lustrerie marble chandelier without losing detail in the rich tartan and velvet upholstery.

2. Managing Dynamic Lighting: Public Grandeur vs. Private Calm

The residence alternates between vibrant public entertaining areas and softer, beige-toned private sanctuaries.

  • The Dramatic Powder Room: Featuring forest-green walls, a statement Timothy Oulton turbine light, and custom marble horse-head vanities, photographing this space required controlling directional light to showcase both the glossy finishes and deep wall mouldings.

  • The Living & Dining Spatial Flow: Tall, arched French windows open out onto an air-conditioned, palm-lined balcony. To document this fluid indoor-outdoor connection, we balanced exterior terrace highlights with the rich jewel tones—emerald greens, deep blues, and warm brass—of the living area.

3. Capturing Personal Scale and Character

Beyond the grand entertaining areas, the apartment scales down into intimate, highly personalized spaces including an expansive walk-in wardrobe, a plush master suite, and a private art-filled nook.

"Gauri gave this home so much love, which really shows in every corner... she used all the colors and a variety of textures—hard, soft, glossy, matte—and yet it all comes together beautifully."

By focusing on clean architectural framing, material contrasts, and spatial scale, The Matter Studio produced a cinematic photographic story that honors both Gauri Khan’s bespoke interior direction and the vibrant personality of the homeowner.
